Jakob Hölscher (Hoelscher), (born October 8, 1798 in Koblenz ; † November 1, 1862 ibid) was a bookseller and publisher in Koblenz. He was born into a bookseller and publisher dynasty. His parents were the bookseller Hermann Joseph Hölscher (1765–1824) and his wife Maria Salome, b. Simonis.

biography

Hölscher not only successfully ran the business he had taken over from his father in 1824, he also worked as a publisher to an increasing extent and for many decades. In addition to numerous publications on the Middle Rhine , Moselle and Lahn , he became widely known for the publication of the imposing volumes of Prince Maximilian zu Wied from his journey to the interior of North America, which appeared in five deliveries between 1837 and 1845 . In addition, the publishing house Jakob Hölscher (also: Jacob Hölscher) in Koblenz (also: Coblenz) published religious and even official texts from various authorities. Jakob Hölscher also ran a book and music shop at Jesuitenplatz 487/8.

Attention should also be drawn to the socio-political activities of this publisher, who was, among other things, a member of the provincial parliament , city councilor of the city of Koblenz and president of the commercial court. From March 13, 1858 until his death, Hölscher was director of the Koblenz Music Institute.

The activity of his publishing house in Koblenz can be proven for almost 40 years; the company name existed from 1808 to approx. 1914, i.e. around 106 years. As a result, he is one of the great publishers of the city of Koblenz in the 19th century, especially in the age of Rhine romanticism - together with Hériot , Hergt , Röhling , Krabben and Karl Baedeker (Bädeker) . Jakob (Jacob) Hölscher must not be confused with his father Hermann Joseph Hölscher, but also not with his own son Ferdinand Hölscher, who continued the publishing company from 1862 to 1887. After that there were different owners at general addresses such as “J. Hölscher ”or“ Verlag J. Hölscher ”- and that until around 1914.
