Rudolf Gehring (born August 17, 1948 in Hollabrunn , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian politician ( Christian Party of Austria ) and was a candidate for the Austrian federal presidential election in 2010 .

Education and personal life

Rudolf Gehring graduated from Laa an der Thaya , Lower Austria, in 1966 . After the end of his military service with the flight registration regiment in Wals-Siezenheim , Salzburg , he began studying law at the University of Vienna , which he completed with a doctorate. At the beginning of his studies he became a member of the Catholic student association K.Ö.St.V. Austria Wien in the ÖCV , later he became a member of the KAV Sanctottensis Heiligenkreuz (also ÖCV) and the secondary school association K.Ö.St.V. Sonnberg-Perchtoldsdorf in the MKV . While working as an administrative lawyer, Rudolf Gehring was already politically active at the local and regional level.

In addition to his political activities, he runs a private property management company and is the director of a student dormitory.

Rudolf Gehring married in 1973 - his wife's first name is Edeltraud. He has four daughters.

Political activity

Gehring was a member of the ÖVP for 30 years . According to his own statements, he resigned from the party in 2005 because of the “Christian social element that had increasingly faded into the background” .

Gehring has been with the Christian Party of Austria since 2008. On November 29, 2008 he took over the office of federal party chairman. Due to the candidacy for the federal presidential election in Austria in 2010 , Gehring gave up this function again. In the election he won 171,668 votes or 5.43%, which meant third place among the three candidates behind competitors Heinz Fischer and Barbara Rosenkranz ; only in Vorarlberg was he able to place himself in front of Rosenkranz.

On November 12, 2011, Gehring took over the party chairmanship again. On November 22, 2014, he was replaced in this position by financial advisor Alfred Kuchar and took over the general secretariat instead.

In the European elections in Austria in 2014 , Gehring and his party supported the candidacy of Ewald Stadler and his newly founded party The Reform Conservatives ; the party clearly failed to win a mandate with 1.2%.

For national elections in Austria in 2017 Gehring leading candidate was his party.

Gehring sees himself as a “Catholic protector of life”, family and human rights activist and has been trying since the beginning of the election campaign to put his promise to become an active Federal President into concrete terms. As Federal President he would demand the right to introduce legislative proposals in parliament. Compared to his competitors, he states that he has greater economic competence due to his entrepreneurial activities and, as Federal President, would like to campaign against corruption and party book management as well as against the debt economy , the misuse of taxpayers' money for party political purposes and the "usurping power of the social partners". He calls for a referendum on Turkey's possible EU accession and rejects the building of minarets in Austria. He also advocates a constitutional review of the Lisbon Treaty and criticizes the legal upgrading of homosexual partnerships. Gehring takes a negative stance on the subject of abortion . He states that he wants to get involved in particular for peace, for Christian and social values.
