After subsequent research at the Institute for Crop Plant Research Gatersleben of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin , he received his doctorate in 1958 at the University of Halle and, after further research at the Institute for Crop Plant Research Gatersleben, habilitated at the University of Halle in 1966 .

In 1990, 1995 and 1997 he was visiting professor for molecular genetics at the University of Salzburg in Austria. Rudolf Hagemann has been chairman of the German Society for the History and Theory of Biology (DGGTB) since 2014.

His main areas of work were genetic instability research (paramutability) and chloroplast genetics. Since the early 1990s, his focus has been on the history of genetics.
