Rudolf II of Anhalt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf Prince of Anhalt , Count of Ascania († September 3, 1365 Coswig ) was canon in the diocese of Magdeburg and in 1365 as Rudolf II. Bishop in the diocese of Schwerin .

Life

With the award of Pope Urban V on June 9, 1365, the canon of Magdeburg, Rudolf, son of Prince Albrecht II of Anhalt-Zerbst, became the new bishop of Schwerin. The position had become vacant when the previous incumbent Bishop Albrecht von Sternberg was transferred to Leitomischl . Occasionally he was also called with the title Graf von Anhalt .

Rudolf received the episcopal ordination as the new Schwerin pastor at the papal court in Avignon from Agapitus Colonna , bishop of Ascoli Piceno , on June 11, 1365, the feast day of the holy apostle Barnabas . On June 23, 1365 he received permission and instructions to go to his diocese. Obviously, this should also happen after Pope Urban had granted certain privileges to the bishop's brother, Johann von Anhalt, such as: use of a carrying altar, holy mass to be held before dawn and full absolution on the death bed.

However, Bishop Rudolf does not seem to have come to his diocese of Schwerin. He died on September 3, 1365 and was buried in the crypt in Coswig Cathedral, where his father was already buried. The cathedral was destroyed in the Schmalkaldic War in 1547. Today only the Domstrasse reminds of it.

On January 14, 1366, Pope Urban V filled the Schwerin episcopal chair.
