Life

Rudolf Kraus studied from 1926 to 1928 at the State Academy for Arts and Crafts in Breslau . In the following year he came to Chemnitz , where he was initially unemployed and was naturalized in 1930. He married in 1933, but the marriage remained childless. From 1939 to 1945 he did military service. Kraus stayed in Chemnitz / Karl-Marx-Stadt where he worked as a freelance artist from 1936 until his death. He was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR .

Kraus produced numerous works of art in public spaces, such as the murals in the reception hall in the old Chemnitz main train station , which were removed in 1956, or the graffiti on the kindergartens Wiesenstrasse (sundial) and Reichenhainer Strasse (fairy tale characters) in Chemnitz. He also designed the giant graffito on the house of the master painter Karbe in Freiberg . Many of his works, such as the stonemason relief on the “Güldenen Bock” in Chemnitz's Rosenhof or the overhead portals above the sales facilities in the Street of Nations , were lost after reunification .
