Rudolf Masl

Rudolf Masl , also Rudolf Maschl (born May 30, 1920 in Vienna ; † August 27, 1943 there ) was an Austrian locksmith's assistant and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime . He was sentenced to death by the Nazi judiciary and beheaded in the Vienna Regional Court at the age of 23.

Life

At the age of 15, Masl joined the Communist Youth Association (KJVÖ), became a locksmith's assistant and lived in what was then the “war returnees settlement” in Vienna- Hirschstetten . After Austria was annexed in 1938, he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and later joined the German Wehrmacht .

In June 1942 he came from Oslo , where he was stationed, to Vienna, was observed by the Gestapo and, when he returned to Oslo, arrested. He is said to have “passed on several field post addresses for sending the communist leaflet“ Soldiers' Council ””. On March 17, 1943 Masl was sentenced to death by the People's Court for “favoring the enemy” and “preparing for high treason ” . From the execution record of the death sentence: “The death sentence was carried out on the convicted Rudolf Masl on August 27, 1943 at 6:14 pm. The enforcement went smoothly and took 30 seconds. "

Commemoration

Masl's name can be found on the war memorial in front of the Hirschstetten cemetery (in Vienna 22, Quadenstrasse 11), but under the heading “In memory of the citizens of Hirschstetten who fell in the two world wars”. On the grave of the Masl family at the cemetery in Hirschstetten there is a memorial stone for him and his girlfriend Elfriede Hartmann , who was also executed by the Nazi regime (in group E, row 3, grave 52). His name can also be found on the plaque in the former execution room of the Vienna Regional Court .

On January 21, 1953, the municipal council committee for culture named Maschlgasse in Vienna- Aspern after him.
