Rudolf Nickenig

Rudolf Nickenig (born May 18, 1953 in Boppard ) is a German winemaker and general secretary of the German Viticulture Association .

Life

As the son of a family of winemakers , Nickenig got to know the winemaking practice in his parents' business on the steep slopes of the Bopparder Hamm ( Middle Rhine ). He studied nutritional science and then did his doctorate at the chair for food science at the University of Bonn on polyphenols in white wines .

In March 1980 he became a consultant at the German Wine Association. In 1984 he became Deputy Secretary General and General Secretary in June 1986. Since then he has been responsible for the organization of the international technology fair for wine, fruit and fruit juice INTERVITIS INTERFRUCTA as well as for the German wine-growing congresses. In 1991 Nickenig took over the management of the Association of German Wine Exporters.

Nickenig has been a member of the Advisory Committee for Wine at the EU Commission in Brussels since 1986 and Vice President of the Wine Section at the European umbrella organization of agricultural producers COPA-COGECA , Brussels. He works in committees of the Comité Vins (CEEV) and the International Association of the Wine and Spirits Industry (FIVS), as well as in the Assembly of the European Wine-Growing Regions (AREV), in the International Organization for Vines and Wine (OIV) and in the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Wine Academy (DWA).

From 1986 to 2018 Nickenig was editor-in-chief of the specialist magazine “ Der Deutsche Weinbau ”, where he regularly publishes editorials and specialist articles. On the occasion of his retirement, the German Farmers' Association (DBV) honors Dr. Rudolf Nickenig with the award of the Andreas Hermes Medal.
