Rudolf Rechsteiner

Rudolf (Ruedi) Rechsteiner (born October 27, 1958 in Basel ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ). He was a member of the Swiss National Council and most recently of the Grand Council of Basel.

Life

Rechsteiner finished 1977 at Gymnasium am Münsterplatz the Matur off, after which he studied economics , politics and sociology at the universities of Basel and Geneva . From 1982 to 1985, Rechsteiner was a business editor at the Basler Zeitung , then until 1991 department head at the Sanitary Department of Basel-Stadt. In 1986 he received his doctorate, in 1988 he was elected to the Grand Council, the Basel cantonal parliament, of which he was a member until 1999. From the 1995 elections until his resignation in May 2010, Rechsteiner was a member of the National Council . Beat Jans was his successor . In February 2013 Rechsteiner was re-elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt. He remained a member of this until 2017.

Rechsteiner is President of the Swiss Foundation for Development Cooperation Swissaid and a member of Amnesty International and other various left-wing organizations (e.g. relating to nuclear energy). Rechsteiner is known for its commitment to the production of renewable energy .

Rechsteiner is married and has two sons.

On February 12, 2014, Rechsteiner attracted attention across Switzerland with his demand to have another vote on the federal popular initiative “Against mass immigration” that had been approved by the population on the previous Sunday .
