Rudolf Schlegelmilch

Rudolf Schlegelmilch (born September 7, 1931 in Arnstadt ; † December 21, 2018 in Aalen ) was a German physicist and paleontologist .

Schlegelmilch studied physics in Jena and Berlin, received his doctorate in 1967 at the TU Berlin (dissertation: Recombination processes in the electroluminescence of zinc sulfide phosphors) and was then project manager for large astronomical instruments at Carl Zeiss in Oberkochen . In addition, he dealt with paleontology. He quit Zeiss in 1991 and devoted himself entirely to fossil studies.

Schlegelmilch was known for several standard works on ammonites from the southern German Jura . He was involved (among others, for example Ulrich Sauerborn ) in the establishment of the Prehistory Museum in Aalen , which opened in 1977. The Urweltmuseum is now located in the Old Town Hall . The museum is run by the Ostalb geology group and is part of the Swabian Alb Geopark .

In 1973 he chaired the 44th annual meeting of the International Paleontological Society in Aalen.

In 1986 he received the Zittel Medal for his services to palaeontology . In 2006 he received the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany.
