Rudolf Schumacher

Rudolf "Rudi" Schumacher (born April 12, 1908 in Leipzig ; † May 22, 2011 there ) was a German gymnast .

Life

Schumacher came into contact with gymnastics from an early age, and in 1913 he became a member of ATV Connewitz. His father, Paul Schumacher, was also an equipment artist. As a five-year-old he experienced the 12th German Gymnastics Festival and on October 18, 1913 witnessed the inauguration of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in his hometown. After finishing school, he first learned to be a carpenter . Remaining loyal to gymnastics, Rudi Schumacher took part in the German Gymnastics Festival in Cologne for the first time in 1928 . In 1935 he made the leap into the German ranks and took part in three German championships. At the beginning of the Second World War , Schumacher was drafted and stationed in France , initially in a guard company in Montpellier , where he continued to have training opportunities. But after a short time he too had to go to the front. On the third day of his mission, he was seriously wounded, sustained two gunshots in the abdomen and one wound through the upper arm. Schumacher was then taken prisoner by the Americans and only returned to Leipzig a year after the end of the war . After a long regeneration, the now 41-year-old returned to the equipment and took part in numerous competitions, for example the Hamburg-Berlin-Leipzig city comparison (in this comparison competition he took part a total of 23 times during his active time), where he still did did one last comb-grip somersault at the age of 50. From then on he mainly worked as a trainer, but also taught at the German University for Physical Culture in Leipzig.

Rudolf Schumacher was the first head coach of the SC DHfK Leipzig and celebrated a number of successes.
