Rudolf Wittenzellner

Rudolf Wittenzellner (* 1921 in Munich ; † April 20, 1997 there ) was a German radiation protectionist and university professor.

Rudolf Wittenzellner studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1951. In the following years as an assistant at the Ludwig Maximilians University, he dealt with the use of X-rays in medicine and was responsible for dealing with radioactive substances and training in radiation protection . In 1959 he was approached with the request to found a research facility in radiation protection, which in 1960 became the experimental and training facility for radiation protection in Neuherberg near Munich as part of the Society for Nuclear Research . In 1964 the Society for Radiation Research emerged, today's Helmholtz Center Munich . Rudolf Wittenzellner became their first scientific managing director together with Otto Hug , from 1964 he was scientific and technical managing director and remained so until his retirement in 1981. Under his leadership, the work area of ​​the research center was expanded to include topics of environmental influences on health . In the Society for Radiation Research he also headed the Institute for Radiation Protection until 1966; Felix Wachsmann succeeded him in this function .

In 1974 he received an honorary professorship for medical ecology and radiation protection at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In his retirement, he became a member of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Science and Technology for Development, now the Commission on Science and Technology for Development . Rudolf Wittenzellner was awarded two Japanese medals, the German Red Cross Decoration , the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Merit Prize of the International Academy of Environmental Safety .
