Ruggero Bovelli (born January 13, 1875 in Pantalla , † June 9, 1954 in Ferrara ) was an Italian clergyman and archbishop of Ferrara .

Life

In 1915 he was appointed Bishop of Modigliana , from 1924 he also held the seat of Faenza . In 1929, the year of the Lateran Treaty between State and Church, he was promoted to Archbishop of Ferrara and entered the Archdiocese on January 5, 1930, and remained in office until his death.

Act

He has been called the “pastor and defender” of the city of Ferrara for defending persecuted citizens, the Jews of Ferrara and political dissidents of fascism. A letter from him dated April 21, 1945 to the Allied Military Command prevented the Allies from using heavy weapons against the city of Ferrara while it was being evacuated by German troops for three days.

Honors

The city named a street after him. A building of the archdiocese, the Casa Mons. Bovelli , which he bought in 1950 as the seat for the Catholic Action , still houses the diocesan lay associations today. In 1955, a marble funerary monument dedicated to him, designed by the architect Enrico Alessandri and executed by Ulderico Fabbri , was installed in the right transept of the cathedral at the foot of the crucifixion by Niccolò Baroncelli and Domenico di Paris.
