The 101st Around Cologne 2017 was a German road bike race with start and finish in Cologne after 205.7 kilometers . It took place on Sunday , June 11th, 2017 . It was also part of the UCI Europe Tour 2017 and classified there in category 1.1 .

The winner was the Austrian Gregor Mühlberger from Bora-hansgrohe with a second ahead of the Dane Mads Würtz Schmidt from Team Katusha Alpecin .

Before the start of the professional race

After the start in Cologne's Rheinauhafen , the peloton headed for Bergisches Land . There were six mountain classifications to be completed, including the Agathaberg and two cobblestone climbs to Bensberg Castle . The last 40 kilometers or so were flat. The destination in Cologne was also in Bayenstrasse at the Rheinauhafen.

Race course

Shortly after the start, around 40 drivers pulled away. By the middle of the race, the outliers were back. Then Fabian Lienhard (Switzerland / Vorarlberg) and Victor Campenaerts (Belgium / LottoNL) attacked. Ten drivers joined the two drivers, including Gregor Mühlberger (Austria / Bora). The 12 men had a maximum of four minutes ahead of the field. The peloton could no longer close the gap to the outliers.

1000 meters from the finish, Mühlberger pulled away from the top group and won the race as a soloist. Second in the sprint was followed by Mads Würtz Schmidt (Denmark / Katusha Alpecin) ahead of Lienhard.
