history

First mention

In 1477 the place was mentioned for the first time in a "contract of the Wipperfürther pastor about the use of the offerings for the new St. Agatha chapel near Dierdorf."

The spelling of the first mention was Sent Agathen .

The locals still use this term today, but in the slightly modified form Zintagen

St. Agatha's Church

After Wipperfürth was repeatedly destroyed by a city fire in 1465, the pastor Vollmar and the citizens vowed to carry out a pilgrimage to her burial place in Catania in Sicily in honor of St. Agatha (among other things, patroness against fire) .

One tradition goes on to say that the community was later acquitted of the pledge by a church authority.

In 1474 Pastor Vollmar had a wooden chapel built on a mountain in the parish of Wipperfürth, near the village of Dierdorf, in honor of God and Saint Agatha . In Dierdorf, today divided into Unterdierdorf and Oberdierdorf , there was a chapel at that time.

Around the chapel in Agathaberg, farmers and forest workers settled due to the clearing of the forest and the extraction of arable land.

At the end of the 19th century the chapel was no longer sufficient for the community, which now had more than 1,200 inhabitants, and so in 1894 plans were made for today's neo-Gothic church. The Cologne architect Heinrich Renard provided the plans for the three-aisled nave (built in 1895/1896). The consecration took place in 1903.

The equipment includes u. a. a carved pulpit (early 16th century), sculptures of Our Lady (1st half of the 14th century) and St. Maternus (1st half of the 15th century). In 1961, remnants of lime Secco wall paintings were uncovered during renovation work (16th century).

There is a (restored) station path from 1867 around the church.
