history

In 1548 the place was first mentioned under the spelling "Byrboym". The "List of Bergische Spann- and Schüppendienste" calls "Class tzom Byrboym".

There is evidence of a Landwehr line running from Wuppertal-Elberfeld to Marienheide-Krommenohl in the east of the village. This Bergische Landwehr secured the Bergisches Territory from incursions from the Märkische. The local researcher Gerd Helbeck dates the emergence of this Landwehr to the early 14th century.

A concrete court cross, erected in 1948, is in place.

Hiking trails

Several circular routes marked with the hiking signs A1, A2 and A5 run through the village. The paths are signposted by the Sauerland Mountain Association and have their starting point and destination at the hiking car park in the village of Wipperfürth- Egen, 700 m away .
