Hammern is a district and place of Wipperfürth in the Oberbergischer Kreis in southern North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ) within the administrative district of Cologne and is located between Wipperfürth and Hückeswagen .

history

An iron hammer is mentioned for the first time in 1484 "An der Hammerbecke".

"Bey dem hamer fur wypvorde"

The place name originated when the Reinshagen family came to Wipperfürth in 1737 and built an iron hammer west of the village of Hilgersbrücke . First the area was called "Reinshagens-Hämmer", later called Hammern. The iron hammer in Hilgersbrücke was replaced by a fulling mill in 1926 .

At the turn of the 18th century, a chapel was built at the Jostberg court group to the west of Hammern , which was replaced by a new one in 1901.

From 1963 to 1965, a modern church was built on Jostberg based on a design by the Cologne architect Gottfried Böhm , which was inaugurated in August 1966 by the dean Joseph Mäurer from Wipperfürth. The official consecration took place on April 20, 1969 by Bishop Vitus Chang . Böhm provided numerous designs for the furnishings.

Economy and industry

In Hammern there is an industrial area in which, among other things, the Oberbergische Verkehrsgesellschaft (OVAG) and "POLIFILM PROTECTION GmbH" are located. The POLIFILM Group company employs over 170 people at its Hammern location.

Train traffic

The first freight trains started running on the Wippertalbahn on December 22, 1876. North of Hammern there was a stopping point until the 1980s , of which only the station keeper's house has been preserved. The line was closed on December 30, 1995. The line was converted into a pedestrian and cycle path.

Hammern is connected by bus route 336 to Wipperfürth , Marienheide and Gummersbach , Hückeswagen and Remscheid - Lennep .

Streets

The B 237 from Remscheid to Kierspe runs directly through the village.
