history

First mention

In 1443 the place was mentioned for the first time in a document: "Income and rights of the Cologne Apostelstiftes." The spelling of the first mention was Tire . In 1794 residents of Thier tried to move parts of the Lindlar parish, especially the Buchholz, Roderwiese and Oberbüschem farms, which are now part of the Süng parish, to Thier in order to raise Thier to the parish. This failed, however, because this "alarm and incitement" was forbidden by the sovereign after a complaint from the pastor of Lindlar.

Church of St. Anna

In a deed of foundation from 1686, a "Thierer Kirchlein" is mentioned under the name "Heyligen Hauegen" in a valley basin in Unterthier. This place of prayer was later relocated to what is now known as the Kapellenberg because of the frequent floods, and the first large chapel was built from it in 1750.

In November 1892, the church council decided to build a new church in Thier and commissioned the Düsseldorf architect Wilhelm Sültenfuß to design the building plans. The foundation stone was laid on October 21, 1895, and two years later the Thier congregation celebrated its first service in the new church. The old church was laid down in December 1898. The ringing consists of three bells from the foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher. To the north of the church is an old cemetery, mostly with graves from the 19th century. In the forecourt there is a war memorial, erected by Josef Iven in 1951–52.

  • Sports club Thier
  • Wind orchestra MV Thier 1900 eV
  • Church choir St. Anna Thier
  • Citizens Association Thier eV
  • Schützenverein Thier 1921 eV

Most of the citizens of Thier and the surrounding area actively contribute to village life in some way. The music association and church choir beautify many events in Thier and the surrounding area with their musical contribution. The sports club offers many sports with a soccer field and sports hall. The shooters often organize competitions in their self-built shooting range with 6 air and 3 small caliber ranges.

Through the many activities in associations, but also through the loving design of the gardens on Dorfstrasse, the residents of Thier were able to inspire the jury of Our Village Has Future so much that the village received the title of Golddorf at the state level.
