biography

After graduating from the Benedictine Metten St. Michaels Grammar School , Walter Fischer entered the Benedictine monastery there in 1958 and was given the religious name Rupert. From 1959 he studied philosophy and theology at the religious college of San Anselmo in Rome ; he completed his studies in 1965 with a licentiate in theology. From 1965 to 1971 he studied classical philology at the University of Würzburg . After the state examination and legal clerkship, he worked from 1973 as a teacher at the grammar school in Metten. From 1980 until his death, he was senior director of the grammar school.

In addition to his work as a teacher and director of the grammar school in Metten, Rupert Fischer had acquired a reputation as a recognized expert in the field of Gregorian chant through private studies and numerous publications . He was particularly interested in Gregorian palaeography and the restitution of Gregorian melodies. Rupert Fischer received the inspiration and the decisive impetus for this work during his studies at the San Anselmo University, where one of the leading experts taught Gregorian chant with Fr. Eugène Cardine OSB.

Rupert Fischer was a member of the AISCGre (Associazione Internazionale Studi di Canto Gregoriano) and co-editor of the journal “ Contributions to Gregorian Chant ”. He also took on the task of entering the neumes of the St. Gallen manuscript family in the Graduale Triplex published by the French Abbey of Solesmes .
