Russ "Rusty" Tamblyn (* thirtieth December 1934 in Los Angeles , California as Russell Irving Tamblyn ) is an American actor . He is considered a talented dancer, acrobat and gymnast. He is known among other things for his participation in the film West Side Story from 1961, where he played Riff, the leader of the "Jets".

Life

Tamblyn was born into a family who worked in show business . His father Eddie Tamblyn (1908–1957) was also an actor, Russ' brother Larry Tamblyn (* 1943) later became the drummer in the 1960s band The Standells . Lloyd Bridges gave Russ Tamblyn his first role in the play Stone Jungle when Russ was ten years old. He made his first small film appearance in 1948 in The Boy with Green Hair , the following year he received his first major film role alongside George Brent in the sports film The Kid from Cleveland . In 1950 he was seen in the comedy Father of the Bride as the son or brother of Spencer Tracy's and Elizabeth Taylor's characters, and he played this role again in the sequel A Gift from Heaven .

In 1954 he played Gideon, one of the dancing brothers in the film musical A Bride for Seven Brothers . For his performance in the feature film In Frisco Anchor , he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actor in 1956 . For his role in the melodrama Embers under the Ashes from 1957, he was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor . He embodied singing and dancing fairy tale characters under the direction of George Pal in his films The Little Thumble (1958) and The Wonder World of the Brothers Grimm (1962). He played another well-known musical role in the 1961 film classic West Side Story , which won ten Academy Awards , where he played Riff, the leader of the "Jets". He has appeared in westerns, directed by Russell Rouse in The First Bullet Meets (1956), Anthony Mann in Cimarron (1960), and John Ford in That Was the Wild West (1961).

From the late 1960s faltered his career, and he played in some budget low - horror films like the Japanese Frankenstein - battle of the giants with. In later years he moved more to television and made guest appearances on the series Nash Bridges , Babylon 5 , General Hospital , Back to the Past, and The Heavenly Joan .
