Rutger von Langerfeld
Rutger von Langerfeld , the Netherlands. Rutger van Langevelt (born February 15, 1635 in Nijmegen , † March 15, 1695 in Berlin ) was a Dutch mathematician, painter and architect.
Origin and education
Rutger von Langerfeld was born on February 15, 1635 in Nijmegen. In the Netherlands and France he trained in mathematics, painting and architecture and gained practical experience there. From 1670 he is said to have worked as a painter in his hometown of Nijmegen.
Appointment to Berlin
At the age of 43, Langerfeld accepted an offer from the great elector, Friedrich Wilhelm , to Berlin. He came to the Brandenburg capital in the summer of 1678 and was appointed court painter there with immediate effect. Langerfeld later took on the vacant position of court architect. At the special request of the great elector, Langerfeld taught his sons, Prince Ludwig and Prince Philipp Wilhelm, in drawing, mathematics and the art of fortification.
With effect from March 25, 1689, Elector Friedrich III., Later King Friedrich I , confirmed Langerfeld in his offices as court painter and court architect.
Only the new building of the hunting and pleasure palace in Berlin-Köpenick (1677–1690), whose construction management he was until 1684, has been archived. Langerfeld is rightly ascribed to the Dorotheenstädtische Kirche in Berlin, begun in 1678 (completed in 1687, destroyed in the war), a simple central building on a Greek cross plan with a turret. The plaque there for Langerfeld showed that he also wrote mathematical works.
As a painter, starting from Dutch Mannerism, he turned to the cool North German Baroque. Its "church interior" from 1671 ( Caputh Castle ) is typical of the former style. In Berlin around 1680 he created the ceiling fresco in the crown cabinet and in the prayer chamber of the electoral rooms of the city palace (destroyed in 1945).
Together with Joseph Casteels , Langerfeld designed six large tapestries for the Berlin court, which were then executed by Pierre Mercier ; the latter was the founder of the first tapestry factory in Berlin. Of the pupils of Langerfeld, the painters Samuel Theodor Gericke and Friedrich Wilhelm Weidemann should be mentioned here . Langerfeld's son Wilhelm was also a painter.
death
The painter and architect Rutger von Langerfeld died in Berlin on March 15, 1695 at the age of 60. His widow Aletta de Man, who came from a noble family, had a splendid grave monument erected for him in the Neustadt church in Berlin.
