Ruth Shagoury Hubbard (born March 3, 1924 in Vienna , † September 1, 2016 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) was an Austrian- American biochemist . She was the first full professor in science at Harvard University .

life and work

Hubbard and her family emigrated to the United States in 1938, where they attended Brookline High School in Brookline , Massachusetts . In 1942 she married Frank Hubbard, from whom she divorced in 1951. She studied biochemistry at Radcliffe College , Cambridge with a bachelor's degree in 1944. In 1948 she studied at University College Hospital Medical School in London with a US Public Health Service predoctoral fellowship and received her PhD in biology from Radcliffe College in 1950 . She then did research at Harvard University and received a Guggenheim scholarship in 1952 at the Carlsberg Research Center in Copenhagen . She returned to Harvard University in 1954 as a research assistant and lecturer, where she became professor in 1974 and visiting professor in 1972 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . In 1958 she married George Wald , with whom she had already worked as a research assistant at Harvard on research into the biochemistry of retinal and retinol . Her research with Wald made many important contributions to the understanding of the biochemistry and photochemistry of vision in vertebrates and invertebrates, for which he won the Paul Karrer Medal in 1967 . She was a member of the American Society of Biologic Chemistry and published at least 31 scientific papers on the process of vision . Since the 1960s she has been involved in social and political issues and has become known as a critic of sociobiology . She has written several books and articles for both professional and popular journals on the subject. In 1973, Hubbard was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
