The Ruthenian globe thistle ( Echinops ritro ) is a plant from the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is native to Eastern and Southern Europe and is grown as an ornamental plant.

features

The Ruthenian ball thistle is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 70 (100) centimeters. Ornamental shapes are also getting taller. The leaves are rolled up at the edge. On top they are glandular, have few simple hairs and are shiny. The underside is felty white. The leaves are double pinnately shimmering.

The bracts are straight or slightly curved. The flowers are bluish-gray. The pappus bristles are fused in the lower half. Flowering time is July and August. The achenes are cylindrical, pentagonal and have yellowish-silky hairs. The pappus is short scaly.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30 or 32.

distribution

The area includes Western Asia, Eastern Europe from Russia to the Czech Republic, the Balkan Peninsula, Italy, southern France and Spain. Originally, the species is also found in Central Asia, Siberia, the Caucasus, Mongolia and Xinjiang. In the northern United States, the species is a neophyte.

The natural area has its western border in the Pannonian region of Lower Austria . The Ruthenian globe thistle grows here on sunny rocky slopes and in rocky steppes of hill height level . The species occasionally grows wild in the rest of Central Europe.

Systematics

The following subspecies can be distinguished:

  • Echinops ritro subsp. ritro
  • Echinops ritro subsp. meyeri (DC.) Kožuharov : It occurs in Russia.
  • Echinops ritro subsp. ruthenicus (M. Bieb.) Nyman (Syn .: Echinops ruthenicus M. Bieb. ): It occurs in Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Italy, the Ukraine, Moldova, on the Balkan Peninsula, in Russia, Romania, Bulgaria and the Middle East. The chromosome number is 2n = 32.
  • Echinops ritro subsp. sartorianus (Boiss. & Heldr.) Kožuharov (Syn .: Echinops sartorianus Boiss. & Heldr. ): It occurs only in Greece.
  • Echinops ritro subsp. siculus (Strobl) Greuter (Syn .: Echinops siculus Strobl ): It occurs in Italy, Sicily and Malta.
  • Echinops ritro subsp. thracicus (Velen.) Kožuharov (Syn. ' Echinops thracicus Velen. ): It occurs in Bulgaria.
