Ruthless is an American heavy and power metal band from Los Angeles , California that was founded in 1982, disbanded in 1990 and has been active again since 2008.

history

The band was formed in 1982 by singer Sammy DeJohn and guitarist Ken McGee. A short time later, the guitarist roles Lagman, the drummer Todd Billings and the bassist Jack Black joined the cast. Appearances with Slayer , Great White and Leatherwolf followed . After a demo in 1984, a contract with Iron Works followed . About this the EP Metal without Mercy was released towards the end of the year , which was produced by Bill Metoyer . The EP was licensed by Banzai Records and in Europe by Ax Killer Records . The cover design was completely changed and some of the musicians were given artist names. In 1986 the first and only album Discipline of Steel followed via Ax Killer Records . In 1990 the band split up. In 1997 the EP and the album were re-released together on CD , the edition of which was limited to 2000 copies. In 2008 the band got back together to perform with UFO in the US. In April 2009 the group also played on the Keep It True . In addition, Metal without Mercy was re-mastered and re-released via Graveyard Productions , with the two unreleased songs Winds of War and White Death from 1988 included as a bonus . In September 2010 the band played at the Swordbrothers Festival in Germany and the Up the Hammers Festival in Athens in March 2011.

style

In the book US Metal Vol. 1 Arno Hofmann wrote that on Metal without Mercy you can hear songs that are heavy and anthem-like at the same time. The band would have started what Tyrant would have completed two years later. According to Hofmann, the Rock Hard Discipline of Steel had panned out and wrote that the songs would be on the level of bad overkill songs. According to Martin Popoff in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 2: The Eighties was metal without Mercy with the EP Marshall Law by Obsession comparable. The EP is as "efficient" as an Armored Saint release. The songs are mostly groovy and in the medium speed range. The riffs would be reminiscent of Metal Church . Disciples of Steel continues this sound and is comparable to Shout at the Devil by Mötley Crüe . According to Ralf Frank from Metal Hammer , you can hear “[really] heavy riffs , hard drums and a grating voice” on Metal without Mercy . Frank also heard influences from Metal Church. According to Charles Hunfeld from Metal Hammer , “[p] rima Heavy Metal, as one is used to in this form only from bands like Slayer or Exciter ”, can be heard on Discipline of Steel . In terms of their complexity, the songs are comparable to those of Shok Paris .
