Ryan Hreljac (born May 31, 1991 in Canada ) is a Canadian human rights activist , water activist and political scientist . With his foundation - founded in childhood - he tries to fight for clean water and access to water worldwide.

Live and act

The then 6-year-old became aware of the problem of unclean water and the associated problems through primary school. In order to get closer to this goal, he collected money obtained through housework and small donations to use it for the construction of wells. But the first attempts failed.

In 2000 he traveled to his pen friend in Uganda and was able to have the first well built there after a long struggle. The story of the pen pal is recorded in a children's book.

In 2001, with the help of his parents, the Ryan Wells Foundation was set up to raise money for the construction of wells, latrines and access to clean water. Since then, the foundation has raised around 10 million euros, built 878 wells and 1,120 latrines in more than 16 countries in Africa and the Caribbean (including Malawi , Zimbabwe , Ethiopia , Tanzania , Uganda , Kenya , Nigeria , Haiti ).

This measure gives more than 823,238 people access to clean water.

He received support from Prince Edward and Jane Goodall ; numerous media reported about him worldwide, such as Time magazine, People magazine , Reader's Digest and he was on Oprah Winfrey's talk show . In Germany, too, there were often reports about him, for example he was a guest on Markus Lanz's program or the Frankfurter Rundschau wrote an article about the then 12-year-old on November 22, 2003.

He has been awarded several prizes for his commitment.

Hreljac later studied political science and international development at the University of Halifax and graduated in these subjects.
