Athletic career

McBride began playing football at Brandywell Harps before joining Institute FC in the 2007 second-rate NIFL Championship . In 2010 he moved to Derry City in his native city, where he initially played in the youth and reserve team. When the then second division team at the end of the year managed to rise from the second-rate First Division , McBride was left without a stake. Under coach Stephen Kenny, he moved up to the competition team the following year and established himself in the regular formation after his debut in the Premier Division during the year. So he was also used in September of that year in the final of the Irish League Cup against Cork City and won his first title with a goal by his teammate Éamon Zayed with a 1-0 win. In the following season he played in 23 of 30 season games and was almost regularly in the starting line-up. He also reached the final of the Setanta Sports Cup with the team in May ; However, he missed a win in the supranational competition on penalties against Crusaders FC . In autumn the club was more successful in the final of the FAI Cup , where he contributed as a substitute in extra time to the 3-2 win against the capital city club St Patrick's Athletic . As a result, he gained his first experience in the European Cup in qualifying for the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League ; with the club, however, he retired early in the second round against the Turkish club Trabzonspor .

In the following years, McBride, who became the undisputed regular player on the defensive of his club, moved up to the team captain . After several placements in the middle of the table, the team returned to the top of the table in the 2016 season under coach Kenny Shiels and reached the first qualifying round for the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League at the end of the season as third . In the following season the club started hopefully with four wins from the first four games; McBride was one of the goalscorers in two of the last three league games.

He was found dead in his apartment the day after a 4-0 win over Drogheda United . John Delaney , CEO of the Football Association of Ireland , announced a memorial for the Irish national team's qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup against Wales , which is due to take place the following weekend .
