Sándor Vándor
Sándor Vándor (born July 28, 1901 , Miskolc , Austria-Hungary ; died January 14, 1945 , Sopron ) was a Hungarian composer and conductor .
Life
Alexander Venetian's Jewish name was Magyarized to Vándor . Vándor fled to Berlin after the defeat of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1920 . He studied there and from 1921 at the Leipzig Conservatory with Paul Graener and in 1924 went to Italy as an opera répétiteur . In 1932 he returned to Hungary, where he worked as a coach and opera conductor in Sopron .
Vándor composed chamber music and orchestral music based on Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály . His second opera remained unfinished. He set poems by Attila József and Endre Ady to music . Vándor directed workers' choirs and composed choral music .
In 1940 he was used as a Jew for forced labor in Carpathian Ukraine . In 1944 he was arrested again as a Jew and died in custody in early 1945.
