São Jorge is a municipality ( freguesia ) on the north coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira , in the district ( concelho ) of Santana . The community has an area of ​​19.3 km² and 1,473 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

From 1419 the settlement of Madeira Island began. In 1515 , the independent community of São Jorge was created.

In 1999 , UNESCO added the Madeira Laurisilva Forest to its World Heritage List . About half of the municipality of São Jorge is located in this nature reserve.
