São Roque do Faial is a municipality ( freguesia ) on the north coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira , in the district ( concelho ) of Santana . The community has an area of ​​15.6 km² and 736 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

After João Gonçalves Zarco rediscovered Madeira Island, the Portuguese began to settle Madeira Island in 1419 . After the settlers living here had already built their first church in 1551 , the independent municipality of São Roque do Faial was not created until 1848 , by splitting off from the municipality of Faial .
