The São Pedro de Balsemão Church (also Capela de São Pedro de Balsemão) is located on the southern edge of the city of Lamego in Portugal . A facade from the 17th century hides a heavily rebuilt, but originally Visigothic chapel from the 7th century, which is believed to be the oldest in Portugal.

architecture

The front side of the central nave, executed in Visigothic ashlar technique , with its side wall attachments and the subsequently raised, but re-filled horseshoe arch at the entrance to the chancel , belongs to the old stock .

The now-supporting smaller inner sheet is in the lower part of set columns and above frieze-like retracted in the wall dressing fighter consoles supported. The rear wall tongues that laterally delimit the ship have the same consoles. The reliefs of all four consoles consist of rhombuses , dewbands and circles . They are reminiscent of decorations from the Iron Age places of the Castro culture . An altar pillar with a relief cross was used as building material in an adjoining room. In the small, squat nave, the walls indicate the reuse of Roman materials. Noteworthy is the sarcophagus of the Bishop of Porto Alfonso Pires , who died in 1362. It is decorated with bas-reliefs. The lying figure is lifted up by two angels.
