course
The source of the Södingbach is located on the southwest slope of the Walzkogel , a summit of the Gleinalpengebirge range , about 50 meters west of the Schürfenhütte on the northwestern edge of the municipality of Geistthal-Södingberg . From there, the stream first flows in a right-hand arc, including through the local area of Geistthal , before it turns to Eggartsberg on a relatively straight course to the southeast, on which it remains until its confluence with the Kainach northwest of the market town of Mooskirchen . Along its course, the Södingbach flows through both Geistthal and Södingberg as well as the local areas of Stallhofen and the former municipality of Söding . On short stretches, the Södingbach also forms the municipal boundaries between Söding-Sankt Johann and Hitzendorf and Mooskirchen.
Flood and flood protection
The bridges that lead over the Södingbach near Södingberg, near the border with Aichegg , and in the municipality of Stallhofen, have too small a cross-section. So it happens due to Verklausungen repeatedly to flooding. The near -natural flood protection built near Bernau was awarded the Geramb sign of thanks for good building in 1992 . When the flood protection was installed, the narrow stream bed was widened considerably so that it can change freely through the dynamics of the water. The bridge, which leads north of Bernau over the Södingbach, was designed for a flood of the century , but can only fulfill this function to a limited extent due to the regular, heavy landings .
In addition to Bernau, there are four other flood protection sections. The first section, around 4.5 kilometers long, is in Geistthal, followed by two sections around 2.5 kilometers and 0.6 kilometers in length in Södingberg. A fourth section, around 4.5 kilometers long, is located in Söding-Sankt Johann and extends to the railway bridge of the Köflacherbahn .
