Sören Wibe

Sören Axel Wibe (born October 8, 1946 in Östersund ; † December 29, 2010 ) was a Swedish economist and eurosceptic politician .

Life

Wibe was 1995-1999 Member of the European Parliament for the Swedish Social Democrats and from 2002 to 2006 Member of the Swedish Parliament . Since July 6, 2008 he was party leader of the Swedish June List . In January 2009 he was elected President of the European party EU Democrats - Alliance for a Europe of Democracies, an association of political movements from 15 European countries.

Sören Wibe was most recently Professor of Economics at Umeå University . He was one of the most prominent EU critics in the Swedish Social Democratic Party. In April 2008, he resigned from the party, citing a number of broken pledges on EU issues and judgments by the European Court of Justice that he believed would limit the position of trade unions and the right to strike in Sweden. Wibe also took an active part in the European No Campaign against the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe .

Shortly after leaving the Social Democratic Party, he was elected one of the two chairmen of the newly founded June list, together with Annika Eriksson . In January 2009 Eriksson resigned from her post, since then Wibe has led the party alone and was also its top candidate for the 2009 European elections .

Sören Wibe died on December 29, 2010 after a short illness at the age of 64.
