The southern glossy crab spider ( Synema globosum , Syn .: Synaema globosum ) is one of the 40 species from the family of crab spiders (Thomisidae) that occur in Central Europe .

description

The females of the southern gloss crab spider reach an average of 8 mm, the males only 4 mm. In addition to the coloring, the raised side eyes are distinctive, with the front ones standing higher. Prosoma and the legs are drawn black and dark brown. The upper side of the circular opisthosoma is particularly noticeable , with a yellow to reddish background in both sexes with broad, black, laterally frayed markings.

Way of life and distribution

The animals lie in wait for their victims on umbellifers (Apiaceae) and other flowering plants, mostly on yellow or red flowers and leaves. The adult animals can be spotted from May to August.

The species is the most widespread of all European representatives, but is absent in the north (therefore not in England and central and western Scandinavia ). The population increases significantly towards the south. It is also known from the Canary Islands , although it is uncertain whether an independent subspecies has already developed there. In Germany, most of the records are found in the river plains south of the Main, but the species is occasionally found further north on the Elbe .

Systematics

Four European species are known from the genus Synema . The three other types are common as follows:

  • Synema ornatum ( Thorell , 1875) : Hungary, Ukraine and southern Russia.
  • Synema plorator ( OP-Cambridge , 1872) : southeastern Europe (southern Russia to Crete).
  • Synema utotchkini Marusik & Logunov , 1995 : Southern Russia

More than 120 species of the genus Synema have been described worldwide : Nearctic : 3, Neotropical : 44, Palearctic : 15, Afrotropic : 51, Oriental : 7, Australis : 2.

In the past, numerous subspecies were distinguished. Today, in addition to the nominate form Synema globosum globosum ( Fabricius , 1775), only the subspecies Synema globosum nigriventre Kulczyński , 1901, occurring in Russia, is differentiated .
