Systematics
Order : Lung snails (pulmonata)
Subordination : Land snails (Stylommatophora)
Superfamily : Pupilloidea
Family : Lauriidae
Genre : Lauria
Type : Southern doll snail
Scientific name
Lauria sempronii
( Charpentier , 1837)

The Southern dolls snail ( Lauria Sempronii ) is a terrestrial snail species from the family of lauriidae .

features

The case is only 3 to 3.2 mm high and 1.5 mm wide (thick). It is slender-oval with a blunt apex. The five to six whorls are moderately arched. The skin is reddish brown in color, very thin and translucent. The mouth is oval with a folded, narrow mouth seam. The lip is relatively narrow and thin. The angular tooth is very small or completely absent.

Similar species

It is very similar to the shell of the naveled pupa snail ( Lauria cylindracea ), but even smaller and somewhat narrower than this species. The whorls are more arched and a basal edge is missing. The lip of the mouth is narrower and the angular tooth, if any, is not connected to the outer lip.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The southern pupa snail is found in Catalonia , southern and eastern France (mainly in the Pyrenees and the French Alps ). The occurrence extends into southern Switzerland ( Valais , Ticino ), northern Italy, the Apennines , southern Italy to Austria . There are also individual occurrences in England , although earlier occurrences may have already become extinct. The species is also reported from the Canary Islands and Albania .

It prefers to live in the forest, on old walls that are overgrown with moss, and more rarely on stumps that are overgrown with moss. The habitats are in higher regions, but rarely above 1000 m above sea level.

Way of life

Almost nothing is known about the way of life of the species. However, it is likely to be similar to that of the closely related Nabeled pupa snail ( Lauria cylindracea ), which has been studied somewhat better in this regard. The hermaphroditic animals are ovoviviparous , i. H. the eggs are retained in the mantle cavity until the juvenile snails hatch. So they “give birth” to fully developed, very few young. The bifurcated doll snail grows very slowly, takes two years to reach sexual maturity and is around five years old. A maximum of six young are born per breeding season.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1837 by Johann von Charpentier as Pupa (Sphyradium) Sempronii . The holotype comes from Gondo at the Simplon Pass (Canton, Valais, Switzerland). Today it is consistently placed in the genus Lauria Gray, 1840.

Hazard and protection

The species is endangered in many regions (e.g. Switzerland), in Austria it may already be extinct. In England it was also assumed that the population in Gloucestershire would have died out. However, new deposits have been found.
