The Cologne Südpark is located on the southern edge of the Marienburg district between the semicircular street Am Südpark and the rear property of Leyboldstraße . The continuation of Goethestrasse , which is the main thoroughfare of all Marienburger streets, runs through the center of the park .

history

The south park was commissioned by the city of Cologne, which was the client , based on a design by the garden architect Adolf Kowallek . The basis for its facility was a development plan that came into force in 1896 . Together with the park, the city had the so-called “Südpark-Restaurant” (Am Südpark 36) built in 1900/01 according to plans by the Cologne architect Johannes Kleefisch . Also in 1900, the street Am Südpark , which delimits the park, was laid out, on which several villas were built in the subsequent period , with their façades facing the park. From 1904 the Südpark was the end point of a tram line (closed in 2002).

Until the Second World War , the Südpark was one of the most popular excursion destinations for the Cologne population , also because of the restaurant and its elegant surroundings in the garden suburb and villa colony of Marienburg. Immediately to the north were extensive garden plots of the villas on Leyboldstrasse, which acted as an extension of the park. In the evening it was closed by gates. The park originally also had a children's playground in its western area .

During the Second World War, the Marienburg district was exposed to heavy bombing attacks, which also affected the Südpark restaurant, the ruins of which were demolished in 1951. In its place there is now a new children's playground. The park was entered in the city of Cologne's list of monuments on July 1, 1980.

Südpark restaurant

Südpark-Restaurant (before 1910)

The Südpark-Restaurant, built in 1900/01 on behalf of the City of Cologne based on a design by Johannes Kleefisch, was one of several restoration buildings that existed in Cologne's parks as a social center and had spacious outdoor areas. It was modeled on a Rhenish castle house with special consideration of the regional construction in stone, plaster and half- timbered. The upper floor and the roof area accommodated apartments. Guest rooms and outdoor facilities were oriented towards the more densely overgrown northern area of the park, while kitchens and toilets were located towards the south.

Various expansion plans for the Südpark restaurant before the First World War , including a design by Johannes Kleefisch in 1913, were not implemented. From March 1938 the former restaurant served as a home for the Hitler Youth . During the Second World War, the roof and the upper floor of the building suffered considerable damage. In 1947 it was planned to rebuild it above the preserved ground floor. In 1951, however, the remaining ruins were demolished.

description

View of the Südpark (around 1910)

The Südpark covers an area of 4.65 hectares (originally 4.96 hectares) and is located on an arched floor plan that is unique among the Cologne parks, which was caused by the course of the military ring road. A pine grove that already exists in front of its facility is integrated into the park , which has been supplemented in particular by rhododendrons . Based on an asymmetrical overall conception of the park, the route is curved and is based on the existing pine trees. The original tree population has decreased in density compared to the pre-war period, especially towards the street Am Südpark .

In the park is the panther , a sculpture of a panther cast in bronze by the sculptor Fritz Behn in 1920 . It is also a listed building as part of the Südpark.
