Sŏng Ch'an-gyŏng (born March 21, 1930 in Yesan , Ch'ungch'ŏngnam-do ; † March 26, 2013 ) was a South Korean poet .

Life

Sŏng Ch'an-gyŏng was born on March 21, 1930 in Yesan, South Ch'ungch'ŏng Province . He graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in English in 1964 . He contributed to the compilation of the anthology of the 1960s (60 년대 사화집), also attended by writers such as Park Hui-jin (박희진 |朴喜璡), Park Chae-sam |, (朴在森박재삼) Song ryong Park ( 박성룡 | 朴成龍), Lee Sŏng-gyo (이성교 | 李姓 敎), Lee Ch'ang-dae (이창대 | 李昌 大) and Kang Wi-sŏk (강위석 | 姜偉錫) collaborated. He was also a professor at Sungkyunkwan University . In 1956 he made his debut as a poet with the publication of his poem Miyŏl (미열).

Sŏng is a modern poet in the truest sense of the word. He is a master of metaphor and his poems are full of modernist experimentation in both technical form and content. Those who influenced him generally include the British romantic DM Thomas and the poets of the metaphysical school.

Due to his writing style, the rapid succession and density of his language as well as the use of mostly foreign images, his poetry is usually viewed as difficult to understand. However, it is by no means impossible to appreciate his unique linguistic style. He boldly uses scientific terms like “ion”, “electronics”, “aurora” etc., old Korean, English words and hanja , which can be surprising and fascinating and guarantee complete originality.
