The Swedish steam locomotive type SJ R (II) was a locomotive for heavy goods traffic for use on the ore railway ( Swedish Malmbanan ) Kiruna - Riksgränsen - Narvik in Norrland .

history

From 1902, the Ma series locomotives were used to transport ore trains on the Swedish section . However, since the train weights increased constantly and Norges Statsbaner (NSB) procured stronger locomotives with which the empty wagons were transported from Narvik to Riksgränsen, these trains had to be equipped with push locomotives from Abisko in Sweden .

To avoid overrun, two more powerful R (II) series locomotives were bought by Motala Verkstad in 1908. In 1909 another three locomotives from Nydqvist och Holm followed . No further procurement was made because the electrification of the ore railway had already been decided. The locomotives with five coupling axles were the most powerful steam locomotives in Sweden.

From 1914 the ore railway was electrified and from its completion in 1922 electric locomotives were used on the entire route. From this point on, the steam locomotives were superfluous and moved to the Norra stambana .

GDJ R3 69 and 70

The two locomotives R 974 and R 975 were sold to Gävle – Dala Järnvägar in 1935 .

R3 69 was parked in 1946 and scrapped in 1948.

R3 70 was returned to SJ in 1948 and deployed from the ground . In 1960 it was designated as a standby locomotive ( Swedish Beredskapslok ) and in 1961 it was moved to Falun . In 1963 it was exchanged for the DSB E 964 locomotive , the original SJ F 1200 , which is now a museum locomotive. R3 70 was scrapped in Glostrup in 1963 .

Last missions and whereabouts

The last scheduled use of the locomotives took place in 1961/62 with lime trains between Rättvik and Falun.

R 977 was parked as a standby locomotive in Boden in 1960 and transferred to Falun in 1962. Like R 978, it was retired in 1973 .

After being taken out of service in 1973, the R 976 came into the holdings of the Swedish Railway Museum . In 1978 she was still in Falun, in 2006 in the museum grounds in Gävle .
