The Sport Klub Windhoek (also SK Windhoek ), mostly just SKW , is a sports club in the Namibian capital Windhoek . It is a German Namibian association and with around 900 members one of the largest sports clubs in Namibia.

history

The SKW was formally founded on March 2, 1951. It emerged from the Windhoek gymnastics club founded by Gustav Thomas in 1899 . As a result of the two world wars, the gymnasium built in 1909 and 1912/13 was confiscated and partially destroyed.

In 1945 the Fortuna 45 sports club was finally founded on the premises of the gymnastics club . In the following years the gymnastics club and Fortuna 45 merged under the name Sportklub Windhoek.

Sports departments

Other sports besides the football department are archery , fistball , radio-controlled model car , bowling , rhythmic gymnastics , tennis , table tennis , trampoline and volleyball .

Soccer

The club's football department, SKW FC, played in Namibia's top division for decades. The main sponsor was the Cymot company . In the 2012/13 season , the SKW surprisingly rose to the Namibia First Division . However, the club sold the right to start and entered the third-highest Namibian league from the 2013/14 season and has been sponsored by Wecke & Voigts ever since .

Girls soccer

In 2011, the SKW founded the "Girls League Soccer", a soccer league for girls between 14 and 18 years of age. Seven teams take part in the first season, the games of which take place on Fridays.

The Windhoek Sports Club organizes the Windhoek Carnival , WIKA for short, and the Oktoberfest Windhoek .
