The BB 8500 (also known as Danseuses ) is a French electric locomotive series that was built from 1964 to 1974. A total of 146 locomotives of this type were procured by the Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF).

history

The locomotives belong to the large series of the "BB Alsthom". These were called danseuses (dancers) because they tend to wobble. A total of 146 locomotives of the type BB 8500 were built up to 1974, with three different box shapes. There are sister locomotives that are very similar: 294 BB 16500 , 105 BB 17000 , 13 BB 20200 and 194 BB 25500 . The BB 8500 is a pure DC version of this locomotive family.

technical features

The BB 8500 series has a gearbox with two gear ratios that can be switched at standstill. This made it possible to increase traction at the expense of speed. In the freight train position , 90 km / h (today approved for 100 km / h) and in the passenger train position 140 km / h.

Four series were delivered, whereby the first and second series do not differ externally. There are a total of three different car bodies.

The 8501–8567 have 25 small square ventilation grilles on each side wall, the 8568–8587 13 ventilation grilles on each side wall. The 8588–8646 have a large ventilation band that runs the entire length of the engine room.

The last series has a larger driver's cab, which is why the locomotives are longer. While the length of the underframes in the first three series is 13.7 meters, it is 14.38 meters in the fourth series. The length over the buffers is 14.94 meters for the first three series and 15.57 meters for the fourth. The dimensions of the chassis are the same. The pivot distance is 8.50 meters, the axles in the bogie are 1608 mm apart, which results in a total wheelbase of 9.108 meters. All wheels have a nominal diameter of 1100 mm. Each bogie has a single drive motor (monomotor bogie) that drives both axles via a gearbox. The first series received the TAB 660 A1 engine, while the remaining three series received a TAB 660 B1 engine. Both motors are force-ventilated and have a rated current of 1050 amperes at 1500 volts.

The two single-arm pantographs of type AM 18 U are unevenly distributed on the 3.58 meter high roof. The center of the contact strip of the current collector on the side with the main switch is 4,271 mm outside the center of the box, while on the other side the dimension is 4,239 mm. The middle joint of both pantographs faces the middle of the box.

The locomotives are equipped for push-pull operation and double traction.

In 2015, 25 locomotives were still in operation, the 8616 is intended for the Mulhouse Railway Museum .

Conversion to the BB 88500 series

As with the BB 8100 , some were converted as shunting locomotives to replace the now 50-year-old pre-war BB 300 and BB 4700 locomotives. The conversion was carried out on 30 locomotives, which were given the new series designation BB 88500 , but the old serial numbers were retained, the BB 8504 became the BB 88504 etc. after the conversion . The conversion of the locomotives was carried out by Alstom .

Smaller traction motors were used during the conversion, so that the total power of the locomotive was reduced from 2940 to 2610 kW. The overdrive could no longer be engaged and the top speed was 100 km / h after the conversion, there was still the possibility of coupling with the BB 8500. After the conversion, the car body was painted concrete-gray with yellow decorative lines. In addition, the fan arrangement on the side walls has been changed.

They were only used for the provision of wagon trains between deployment points, maintenance points and sidings. The locomotives were stationed in the depots Chambéry , Villeneuve , Vénissieux and Toulouse . The increased use of multiple units meant that locomotives could be dispensed with in 2014. This year the last locomotive was taken out of service. The BB 88511 of the BB 88500 is reserved for the Mulhouse Railway Museum .

In 2000 eight locomotives were converted into the BB 8700 series for freight train service on the Mont-Cenis Railway . These and other locomotives converted into BB 8700 were retired in 2004/2005 after the decline in freight traffic due to a change of mode of transport .
