The BB 8100 was the first French electric locomotive series for use on the direct current network of the Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF) with 1.5 kV after the Second World War . The locomotives were built by Alsthom , Jeumont-Schneider , Oerlikon in the years 1947 to 1955 in 172 copies. They were in use for about 50 years, after 1995 twelve locomotives were converted into the BB 80000 series as shunting locomotives . A total of six locomotives have been preserved.
history
After 1945, the French state railway, SNCF, followed the trend started by the SBB and manufactured electric locomotives without running axles with bogies. After a smaller series of series BB 306 locomotives without running axles had been produced as early as 1938/1939 and 30 locomotives of this series were built in 1948, a test locomotive with the designation BB 8001 was built in 1947 with roughly the same external dimensions as the pre-war locomotive . It had a single axle drive . The basis for the delivery of the new locomotive was the electrification of the Paris - Dijon line . The test locomotive proved itself. In 1948 a number of the same electric locomotives were built, which then ran on all lines electrified with 1.5 kV direct current until 1955 . The locomotives were more powerful than the pre-war locomotives, so they could move freight trains and passenger trains at the same top speed .
Compared to the BB 300, the BB 8100 were welded. Originally they were delivered in a dark green color. In the early 1980s, they received a concrete-gray locomotive body with yellow decorative strips and a dark gray roof. Initially, the locomotives provided universal services. With the delivery of the faster locomotives for the same purpose as the BB 9400 , their area of operation shifted to the south-east network of the SNCF and increasingly to the freight train service. They were able to move trains with loads of up to 3200 t on the plain ( right bank in the Rhone Valley ). Despite the delivery of newer locomotives such as the SNCF BB 7200 or SNCF CC 6500 , the locomotives could not be dispensed with. The delivery of the SNCF BB 26000 in 1988 did not yet represent a major break in the locomotive inventory, rather the locomotives of the BB 9400 series were retired. The wave of retirement only began in 1993. The machines that were not converted to the BB 80000 shunting locomotives were in service until 2003. Three locomotives were used for network maintenance tasks, including pantographs - ice scrapers for de-icing the catenary. These last vehicles were in service until 2011.

The locomotives were used in the Avignon , Béziers , Chambéry , Dijon-Perigny , Migennes , Aubrais , Lyon , Montrouge , Paris, Tours and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges depots .

Conversion to the BB 80000 series
In order to replace the pre-war BB 300 and BB 4700 locomotives in the Paris area, the SNCF decided in the mid-1990s to convert some BB 8100 locomotives for use as shunting locomotives. The plan was to convert a total of thirty locomotives, but ultimately only twelve conversions were implemented. The converted locomotives were added to the BB 80000 series and given the serial numbers BB 80001 to BB 80012 .
The conversion mainly concerned changing the circuit of the locomotive. They were used for the lower speed of 80 km / h and equipped with special control resistors to enable driving at the lowest possible speeds. Further modifications concerned the equipment with train radio , with a new operator station, a new electronic trip registration according to the Teloc system and the change in the speed of the motors for the traction motor ventilation . All locomotives were equipped in a concrete gray design.
The locomotives were assigned to the Villeneuve-Saint-Georges and Paris South-West depots. They were in use until the 2000s. In 2002 the first locomotives were taken out of service after a replacement was found with the BB 88500 . The last remaining locomotive was the BB 80010 in 2010. This locomotive belongs to the collection of the Mulhouse Railway Museum .
