The SNCF Z 5300 series is a multiple unit of the French state railway SNCF . It usually consists of a multiple unit (ZBD 5301–5445), two intermediate cars (ZRB 25301–25416 / 25591–25597 / 25423–25590) and a control car (ZRABx 15301–15445), which cannot be separated during operation. They run in and around Paris in local traffic on the direct current network .

business

The multiple units are used with both one and two intermediate cars. The possible use of a three-car multiple unit is rare, it is limited to the TER use . As of January 1, 2007, trains with multiple units 5364, 5366, 5367 and 5368 only have one intermediate car instead of two.

The multiple units have automatic couplings and a maximum of 3 multiple units can be operated together.

The door colors marked the main area of application:

  • Silver: service de banlieue , normal suburban traffic
  • Orange: équipées de l'EAS (équipement à agent seul) set up for one-man operation without a train attendant
  • Blue: TER service as a regional train only in 3 parts

As the number of trains decreased, this distinction was abandoned.

Calls

The multiple units were still in use on the Transilien Paris-Lyon network around 2011 on the following routes: Paris-Gare de Lyon- Melun via Combs-la-Ville-Quincy, Paris-Gare de Lyon-Corbeil-Essonnes, Juvisy-Melun, Paris-Gare de Lyon-Montargis / Montereau, Melun-Montereau and Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Montargis. These multiple units also operate on the Transilien Paris-Montparnasse network on the following routes: Paris-Montparnasse –Sèvres-Rive-Gauche and Paris-Montparnasse – Rambouillet. Another area of application was in the TER Center network on the Saint-Pierre-des-Corps-Tours and Les Aubrais-Orléans-Orléans routes. After their number has been steadily decreasing due to retirement, individual missions will remain on the RER lines D Juvisy – Melun and R Melun – Montereau until 2018.

technology

The multiple units were procured in two series. The first series includes the railcars Z 5301–5361, the second series the railcars Z 5362–5445. The most obvious difference between the two series is the rubber bead transition that is only installed from the second series onwards . In the electrical part they do not really differ. In the second series, various design changes made it possible to achieve weight savings, which is why it has a total mass of 151.2 tons, whereas the first series has 153.5 tons.

Since the car body made of stainless Inox -Stahl for a license of the American Budd Company is made and no other painting needed, the base color is silver. Only on the front section is there a colored bar between the two lower headlights for better visibility.

From the mid-1960s to 1978, some vehicles were equipped with improved bogies in order to reach a top speed of 140 km / h. These were used for the express trains between Paris-Gare d'Orsay and Orléans, which only took 90 minutes to travel.

Retirement

In the 2000s, the second series multiple units were scrapped first. The first series was only parked and scrapped in large numbers from 2009, before that only due to accidents. As of January 1, 2007, 58 of the 61 trains of the first series were still in service, and 32 of the original 84 trains of the second series. The last seven trains were decommissioned in mid-December 2018, their services were taken over by the newly delivered trains of the Z 57000 series . The train Z 5327, which was decommissioned in 2015, will be preserved with its control car as a two-part museum unit in the Mulhouse Railway Museum.

Accidents

Several railcars had to be retired because they had accidents or burned out. Two of these trains were involved in the accident on June 27, 1988 at the Gare de Lyon station in Paris .

Similar vehicles

The direct current railcars of the Z 5300 series form a series family with the similar railcars of the Z 6100 series designed for 25 kV alternating current . Up to December 2005, the Luxemburger Staatsbahn (CFL) operated six similar but only two-part AC multiple units under the designation Série 250, similar to the Z 6100 series. Two three-part Z 6100s were sold by the SNCF to the CFL and named Série 260 there.
