The Accor Arena (originally Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy , short: POPB or Bercy) is a multifunctional arena in the Bercy district of Paris in the 12th arrondissement in the east of the city. The building is located at the northern end of the 14 hectare Parc de Bercy directly on the right bank of the Seine .

history

Palais Omnisports

The hall was designed by the architects Michel Andrault , Pierre Parat , Jean Prouvé and Aydın Guvan . Construction work began in February 1981 and three years later, the inauguration was celebrated on February 3, 1984. The opening was made by Jacques Chirac , then Mayor of Paris and later President. The pyramid- shaped building, which is still futuristic today, is covered by a steel frame construction designed by Jean Prouvé. It is supported by four massive, round concrete pillars. Another striking feature is the sloping exterior facade planted with lawn . Today, the POPB offers around 30 possible configurations, depending on the event, with a capacity of 8,000 to 20,300 spectators. Not far from the arena is the Pont de Bercy bridge and the Bercy station of the Métro Paris .

Inside the hall is the Patinoire Sonja Henie , a small ice rink with 400 seats and an ice surface of 56 × 26 meters. It was named in memory of Sonja Henie , the most successful figure skater in history. The Hockey Team of Français Volants receives his opponents in the venue.

The AccorHotels Arena is a member of the European Arenas Association.

Bercy Arena

For its 30th birthday, the POPB is undergoing extensive renovation and modernization. In the course of this, the Palais Omnisports was renamed the Bercy Arena . The work began on March 3, 2014 and after 18 months and costs of 100 million euros, the completion of the work was targeted for October 2015. For the ATP tournament Paris Masters 2014, work was interrupted in October / November. Instead of around 17,000 visitors now, the event hall will hold more than 20,000, and concerts even 21,000. The number of VIP - boxes to be increased from 18 to 50th The architectural office DVVD is responsible for the design of the arena.

AccorHotels Arena

The French hotel company AccorHotels , based in the capital, became the name sponsor of the event arena for ten years at the end of September 2015 with an option for five more years. The cooperation agreement was signed on October 8th of that year. Since then the hall has been called AccorHotels Arena POPB (short: AccorHotels Arena ). The company pays 4.15 million euros annually . The hall was reopened on October 14, 2015.

Accor Arena

After the name giver was renamed Accor in 2019, the name of the multi-purpose hall was changed in February 2020.

Sporting events

The Accor Arena was the venue for a large number of world and European championships . The World Indoor Athletics Championships in 1997 , the European Basketball Championships in 1999 , the Women's Gymnastics Championships in 2000 and the Electronic Sports World Cup in 2006 took place in the arena in Bercy. The ATP - Paris Masters indoor tennis tournament is held annually in the arena. In May 2010, the final of the European Basketball Cup, the ULEB Euroleague and the 21st WKF Karate World Championship in 2012 were also held there.

Also typical outdoor sports are held there, such as beach volleyball , beach rugby , jet skiing , windsurfing or sailing (was sailed in the boat class 12er Mini ) as well as various motorsport events such as the kart race EDF Master Kart take place there. The Supercross Paris-Bercy ( Motocross ) took place in the arena from 1984 to 2013. Because of the renovation work in Omnisports , the event has been located in the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille since 2014 .

In 2017 the arena was one of the nine venues for the men's handball world championship and, alongside the Lanxess Arena in Cologne , the venue for the ice hockey world championship .

In addition to sporting events, the Bercy is a popular venue for concerts . The first concert in the Palais Omnisports of Paris-Bercy gave the hard rock group Scorpions on February 29, 1984 with the support act Mama's Boys.
