SPQR is a strategy game designed by Richard Berg and Mark Herman and published by GMT Games in 1992 . It is part of the Great Battles of History (GBoH) series , which deals with ancient warfare. Dedicated to the battles of the era of the Roman Republic, SPQR is designed to depict the strengths and weaknesses of Roman manipulative tactics.

There are two versions of the game, which differ in some rule changes.

Scenarios

The game includes five historical scenarios ( Cannae , Zama , Cynoscephalae , Beneventum and Bagradas ) as well as a fictional scenario ( Rome versus Alexander the Great ).

material

The cards in the game are printed with a hexagon network , each hexagon representing a distance of about 70 meters. Each move simulates about 15 to 20 minutes, whereby the rules maintain a rather relaxed approach to the time scale. Each counter , depending on the size of the scenario and the type of unit, represents between 300 and 1000 fighters. Since precise details about the terrain, army sizes, combat tactics and methods, leaders and so on are rather unknown, these games, despite their high level of detail, remain rather fictional and speculative.

Extensions

Several extensions for SPQR have appeared since 1992 :

  • Consul for Rome (1992) with the battles of Trebia and Metaurus
  • War Elephant (1992) with the Battles of Magnesia and Raphia
  • Pyrrhic Victory (1993) with the battles of Heraclea and Asculum
  • Africanus (1994) with the battles of Baecula and Ilipa
  • Jugurtha (1998) with the battles of Muthul and Cirta
  • Deluxe SPQR (2008) combines the base game with all expansions that have appeared up to that point, with the exception of the battles of Raphia from “War Elephant” and Cirta from “Jurgurtha”. It also contains the counters for the Battle of Marathon and for the Maccabees' revolt against the Seleucid Empire
  • Barbarian (2008) with the battles of Lautulae , Tifernum , Sentinum , Telamon and Cremona
