The SV Schwaig e. V. is a sports club from Schwaig near Nuremberg , whose volleyball men's team is represented in the 2nd Bundesliga South .
Club history
On April 1, 1933, Max Rummel, Johann Herbst, Fritz Lösel and Leonhard Stamminger, who was elected to the board, founded SV Schwaig, which was initially a pure football club. Sports activities were inactive during the Second World War. Paul Schmidt became chairman on November 2, 1945, and new statutes were drawn up. Two months later, the women's gymnastics department was launched. In the same year, the soccer team started in the regional league. In 1950 the sports center and the soccer field were inaugurated, which were built on a site on Altdorfer Straße leased from the Nuremberg Forestry Office. Five years later, SV Schwaig hosted the German DLV forest running championships . In 1957, the shooting department was added as a new sport offer.
In the twenty-fifth year of the club's existence, an athletics department was created. Other new sports were incorporated with volleyball in 1967, tennis in 1971 and swimming in 1972. In the following year the table tennis department started playing, and a year later a women's handball team was added, while the men did not start playing handball until 1977. A karate department was also founded in 1977 and the move from the sports grounds on Altdorfer Straße to Mittelbügweg was completed. Here the SV had three soccer fields, 1 e-youth field as well as a triple sports hall and a restaurant. For the inauguration, the Bundesliga team Hertha BSC was invited to a friendly game, which the capital city team won 8-1 against the hosts. In 1983, in the year of the 50th anniversary of the association, a winter sports department was founded, and in the new millennium the new branches Nordic Walking (2005) and Triathlon (2006) were added. In 2013, swimming, athletics and handball were no longer part of the sporting activities of the Middle Franconian club; instead, an aikido department was added.
History of the volleyball department
On November 16, 1967, the first official game of the men's team of SV Schwaig in the district league took place. In 1975 he was promoted to the national league. In the following years a successful male youth work emerged, so the CEV cup winner and forty-five-time national player Gabor Csontos was trained in the Middle Franconian sports club. In 1981 the SVS reached its third Bavarian male youth championship. A year earlier, the club hosted the international match between Germany and Canada on the initiative of department head Wolfgang Selle in its own hall, and the men's team was promoted to the Bayern League. In 1986 they were promoted to the Regionalliga and in 1990 SV Schwaig won the Bavarian State Cup for the first time.
In the 1991/92 season, the club from the Nürnberger Land with coach Hans-Jürgen Rutke made it into the second volleyball league for the first time . After relegation in 1994, re-promotion in 1996 and relegation in 1997, there was another setback in 1999: the club had to return to the Bayern League. With the runner-up in the following game year, SV Schwaig gained the right to play again in the then third-highest German league. In 2005 the sports club reached the second Bundesliga for the third time in its history and held this class for five years. After two more seasons in the regional league, the team fought for a place in the newly created third league east in 2012 . Here the SV finished second in the table behind TSV Herrsching, tied on points and rose to the second league south together with Upper Bavaria. In the first season in the second highest German division, Schwaig finished seventh, and in the following year the team improved by one place.
