history
The club was founded on October 31, 1898 as the 1898 Schwetzingen Football Association . After the merger with the soccer club 1910 Schwetzingen , the club took the current name Sportverein 1898 Schwetzingen for the first time . For the three years from 1945 to 1948, the company was named TSV 1864 Schwetzingen during a temporary merger with TV Schwetzingen 1864 . After the dissolution of the merger, the association returned to its old name.
Soccer
During the Second World War, the football men appeared bigger for the first time when they took part in the promotion round to the Gauliga Baden , but failed significantly as fourth. After the war ended, the club rose in 1947 to the amateur league North Baden-North, at that time the second highest division, and was able to qualify for the single-track North Baden league set up for the following season. From this, however, was relegated after a season in 1949. When they returned in 1951, the North Baden league was only third class. Until 1956 and then again in 1956/57 the Schwetzinger belonged to the North Baden league.
In the first year of the 1st Bundesliga , the Schwetzingen footballers had the chance to advance to the new second division of the Regionalliga Süd . But in the promotion round, the team failed significantly. After that, the team played in the midfield of the North Baden league, but missed qualifying for the newly founded Oberliga Baden-Württemberg in 1978 in sixth place . It was not until 1982 that the ascent succeeded, but this was followed by immediate descent. The second league promotion in 1986 was followed by a more successful phase with a third place in 1989 and two fourth places in 1990 and 1991, before returning to the association league in 1993.
In 1969 and 1984, the first SV 98 Schwetzingen soccer team won the Badischer Pokal . The victory in 1984 also qualified for participation in the DFB Cup . However , there was a 1: 2 defeat in the first main round against the then second division club Alemannia Aachen .
Handball
In 2002 the handball department of the SV was brought into the game community HG Oftersheim / Schwetzingen , which was founded in 1997 by TSV Oftersheim and TV Schwetzingen . Since then, the HG can also offer girls and women handball. In the 2003/2004 season, the HG was promoted to the 2nd handball Bundesliga South with the first men's team, to which HG had already been a member for several years.
