The Sa'ar-5 class ( Hebrew סער, German: 'Sturm') is a ship class of the Israeli Navy and consists of three corvettes : the INS Eilat , the INS Lahav and the INS Hanit . These ships are currently the largest units in the Israeli Navy.
history
The three ships were built by Ingalls Shipbuilding of Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in Pascagoula , Mississippi for the Israeli Navy according to Israeli design.
Two more ships of the Sa'ar 5 II class were planned and should run from 2009. With a displacement of 2,800 tons, the ships would have been larger than the first three units. Data: U-hunting ability ( helicopter , torpedoes, fuselage sonar), 16 Harpoon FK, VLS Mk-41 (32 cells), phased array radar .
However, the Sa'ar-5-II project was canceled in 2003. Instead, two units of a special variant of the Freedom-class littoral combat ship were to be procured as part of the US military aid to Israel . However, these plans were abandoned in favor of the Sa'ar-6 class .
commitment
On July 14, 2006, INS Hanit was attacked by Hezbollah boats during the 2006 Lebanon War off Beirut . Presumably a C-802 Noor guided missile of Chinese design hit the ship. The INS Hanit burned for several hours and was temporarily unable to maneuver. Four crew members died.
At the time of the hit, the ship's anti-missile defense system is said to have been switched off as it was not known that such weapons were available in Lebanon . It was feared that their own aircraft would be endangered.
Technical specifications
The ships are equipped with modern radar for air and missile defense.
