The Haifa Naval Base ( בסיס חיפה, transcribed Ba sis Ch eyfa, abbreviatedב Ba "Ch , English Naval Base Haifa ) is the main base of the Israeli Navy . It is located in the northwestern part of the port of Haifa . Since November 2011, Brigadier General Elijahu (" Eli ") Sharvite has been in command of the military port .

history

The area where the Kishon flows into the Mediterranean Sea was populated as early as the Late Bronze Age (approx. 1550–1200 BC), as the excavations on Tell Abu-Hawam have shown. Even then, there was a port in what is now the center of Haifa. From when this was also used for military purposes is unsecured. Later Templars , the Ottoman Empire and Napoleon used the port and roadstead of Haifa (also "Kaiffa" "Hayfa"). As part of his Palestine trip , Wilhelm II visited Haifa on October 25, 1898. Reports in the Le Matin newspaper that the emperor wanted to set up a naval base there were found to be false. As a regular naval base, the port was mentioned several times in the 20th century by British planning commissions. On September 23, 1918, the area was occupied by units of the British Expeditionary Force . Through the League of Nations mandate for Palestine , the port of Haifa came under British administration until May 14, 1948. The second Jewish naval academy was founded in Haifa in 1938 as a successor to the Betar Naval Academy (1935–1938 in Civitavecchia , Italy) . The port was the British military base for operations, supplies and repairs during World War II. On May 14, 1948, Sir Alan Gordon Cunningham , the last High Commissioner of Palestine , left Haifa to travel to Great Britain on the HMS Euryalus . The final evacuation of the British base was scheduled for June 30, 1948 and later known as "Z-Day". Negotiations have taken place on the financial compensation of the facilities built by the British. Until the British withdrew, fighting with various groups in the port area of Haifa was known. On July 1, 1948, David Ben Gurion hoisted the Israeli flag over the port of Haifa as a formal sign of the takeover. Even before the British withdrew and as a member of the Palyam , Aryeh ("Arieh") Kaplan (also "Kipi") was appointed first commandant of the Haifa naval base in April 1948. After 1948 the naval base was expanded. Since 1956 there are facilities for stationing submarines there . The 6th fleet of the US Navy visits Haifa annually with around 20 ships and also uses its repair facilities. On January 16, 2008, seven people were injured in an ammunition explosion on board the Israeli missile speedboat INS Tarschisch in port . For further submarines to be delivered by Germany in 2014, planning for new submarine hangars was completed in 2011 with the support of Jedidja Ja'ari (formerly the base commander ).

deployment

Haifa includes the missile speedboat flotilla with a total of 13 units including the three corvettes of the Sa'ar-5 class , the submarine flotilla with five units of the dolphin class , the missile speedboat and submarine school as well as parts of the patrol boat flotilla (Squadron 914) and an underwater task force. The submarines are known to be armed with nuclear weapons.
