Aleksander "Saša" Vujačić (born March 8, 1984 in Maribor , SR Slovenia , SFR Yugoslavia ), also Sasha Vujačić , is a Slovenian basketball player who was most recently under contract with Scaligera Basket Verona in the Italian A2 series .

From 2004 to 2011 Vujačić was in the North American professional league NBA - and then active for several teams in Europe. In 2015 he returned to the USA and played for the New York Knicks until 2017 . With the Los Angeles Lakers , the Slovene was NBA champion in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons.

Career

Youth / career start in Europe

Vujačić began his professional career when he moved to the Italian club Snaidero Udine at the age of 16. He had previously played in the Slovenian national youth team. He came to basketball through his father, who was among other things basketball coach in Serbia . In Italy, Vujačić developed into one of the best players in the league in the four years he played there. This is how NBA scouts became aware of him, who then invited him to training camps in the United States. Finally, the elected him Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Draft in 2004 to 27 point.

NBA

In the " Triangle offense " played under Lakers coach Phil Jackson , Vujačić was used in the shooting guard position and no longer in the point guard position, which he still played in Europe. That's one of the reasons why he had problems in the first three NBA years to gain a foothold in the NBA. His point yield was only between 2.9 and 4.3 points per game. Above all, his throw was extremely inconsistent, which is why many critics accused him of taking distance throws too often.

Vujačić only showed a significant increase in performance in his fourth NBA season ( 2007/08 ). Especially after the trade from Pau Gasol to the Lakers, he showed more and more appealing performances. Although he still took a lot of three-point throws, the rate was now much better than before, and passed the ball more, which he got more playing time from Coach Jackson.

With his help, the Lakers reached the 2008 NBA Finals , where they lost to the Boston Celtics . He showed his best game of his career in game 3 of the finals series with 20 points (7/10 converted throws, of which 3/5 threes) and 4 rebounds .

His contract with the Lakers was extended for three years in 2008. After he had won the NBA championship with the team in 2009 and 2010 , Vujačić was transferred to the New Jersey Nets on December 15, 2010 in a 3-team deal .

Since 2011

After the 2010/11 season , Vujačić signed a one-year contract with an option for another year at Anadolu Efes Istanbul . The option was drawn and Vujačić played for the team from Turkey until the end of the 2012/13 season.

On February 3, 2014, he received a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Clippers , which was not extended, however.

In March 2014 he signed a contract with the top Italian club Reyer Venezia Mestre . He left the team after the season and initially played for Laboral Kutxa in Spain before joining Istanbul BB in January 2015 .

In the summer of 2015, he returned to the NBA and signed with the New York Knicks .

After two years in New York, he left the NBA for Europe again in 2017 and played for Auxilium Torino from 2017 to 2018 . His last position so far was Scaligera Basket Verona in the Italian Serie A2 in 2019.

Personal

Vujačić was engaged to tennis player Marija Sharapova . In 2012 the couple split.
