Lega Basket Serie A

The A2 series is the second highest Italian division in men's basketball . The organizer of this league is the Associazione Nuova Lega Nazionale Pallacanestro in collaboration with the Italian association FIP .

history

1974 to 2001

The Series A2 in 1974 was established for the first time as a substructure of the time probably play strongest and most professional European league Serie A . It replaced Serie B as the second highest division in Italian club basketball. Ten club teams initially took part in the regular season. The two best teams of the regular season achieved immediate promotion to Serie A, while the other eight teams with the eight "worst" teams of Serie A in two groups played off four other participants in the following season in Serie A. The last two teams in the two groups were relegated to the now third-tier Serie B. In the following season, twelve teams each played in the regular season of Serie A and A2 according to a comparable principle, the participants of the following season. This format was maintained with slight changes until 1978. From the 1978/79 season, the nominal strength of the league was increased again to 14 teams and in addition to two direct promoters to Serie A, there were play-offs with the worst teams in Serie A for further participation in the top division.

Between 1982 and 1995 the Serie A played with a nominal strength of 16 teams. The promotion regulations experienced slight modifications again and again, with the last play-off series at the end of the season without the participation of first division clubs and the waiver of direct promoters after the regular season prevailed. From the mid-1990s onwards, the number of participating teams changed almost every season and was sometimes reduced to just ten teams in the regular season, as was the case in the last 2000/01 season for the time being, as withdrawals and bankruptcies of some of them were increasing in financial terms Effort-making teams were recorded. From 2001 the A2 series was replaced by the LegADue , which was characterized by the fact that the participating teams organized the league in a self-organized manner and only received support from the association during the actual implementation of the game.

Since 2013

The Legadue also repeatedly got into crises due to the insolvency of participating teams and in a dispute with the Lega Basket Serie A over rights to participate in the top division, some of which went to court. Ultimately, the self-organization failed in 2013 and the Legadue was abolished. The teams were integrated into the Divisione Nazionale A (DNA), which had replaced Serie B as the third highest division in 2008 or under this name in 2011. The previous legadue formed the DNA Gold division in the 2013/14 season and the original DNA the DNA Silver with a nominal strength of 16 teams each. After one season they returned to the earlier common name Serie A2, whereby the division into two hierarchically separate divisions Gold and Silver initially remained. Simultaneously, the fourth-highest division returned Divisione Nazionale B to denote Serie B back.

The hierarchical structure of the second highest league in two hierarchically separate divisions is not uncommon in Europe and has its model in Liga Española de Baloncesto (LEB), below the now well play the strongest European league ACB in Spain from seasons LEB Oro and LEB Plata formed becomes. The German 2nd basketball league has also been divided into ProA and ProB according to a similar principle since 2007 .

Since the 2015/16 season, Serie A2 has been played in two separate seasons, Serie A2 Est and Serie A2 Ovest (German: Serie A2 East / Serie A2 West), each with 16 teams, which after Serie A has been increased by two additional teams At the end of the 2018/19 season it was reduced to 14 teams each.

The first eight teams of each of the two seasons played two promoted teams in the Lega Basket Serie A after regular time in two mixed play-offs . The champions of the series A2 will be determined in two games (return leg) between the winners of the two play-off finals.
