The Saadabad Palace Complex , Sad Abad ( Majmue-ye Kakh-e Saadabad , Persian کاخ سعدآباد, DMG Sa`dābād ), is a complex of buildings encompassing around 110 hectares and enclosing eighteen palaces in the northern urban area of Tehran in Iran . Tajrish Square connects to the south . The Niavaran palace complex is just under five kilometers to the east (as the crow flies) .

history

It is historically recorded that the complex originally served the Qajar kings as a summer residence.

In the 1920s, Reza Shah Pahlavi had the facility expanded several times and used it for both official and residential purposes. His son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi continued this tradition from the 1970s. In the course of the Islamic-Iranian revolution , the Saadabad palace complex was given museum purposes.

White palace

The largest of the palaces is the White Palace . It has a living space of 5000 m² spread over 54 rooms. The building, erected in 1936, was converted into the Folk Museum ( Muze-ye Mellat ) in 1982 . The facade of the palace is modern and simple. A wide staircase leads to the first floor of the building. To the left of the facade is a pair of oversized bronze riding boots , the remains of a larger than life statue of Reza Shah. White marble from Yazd lines the floor. In the ballroom is a 145 m², finely knotted Mashhad carpet. Wall paintings with mythological scenes from the Shahnameh -Königsbuch decorate the dome area of the ballroom. Chandeliers , mobiliare antiques and other paintings impress with their splendor.

Many gifts to the royal family, they come from all continents, are housed in the side wing of the palace (in the Muze-ye Honar-e Melal ).

Green palace

The older Green Palace ( Kakh-e Sabz ) , built in 1928, is located in the northern part of the area. Its name is traced back to the green marble lining. A great, oriental, rear terrace corresponds to a simple entrance area. A multi-faceted hall of mirrors is adorned with a finely knotted carpet of around 70 m². The walls are beautifully decorated with stucco. The well-preserved living area is more of a family nature.

Travel museum

The Iranian brothers Omidvar, the recipients of this museum, bear witness to their ten-year trip around the world through all continents, which they began in 1954 with photos and films. Aborigines , Māori , Pygmies , Eskimos and the Paleo Indians and Indians of the Amazon region are well studied and documented motifs.

Other museums

The Museum of Fine Arts ( Muze-ye-ye Ziba Honarha ) shows Hofmalereien of Safavid and kadscharischer time. Overall, an artistic spectrum is covered that extends through the epochs from the 17th to the 20th century. Other museums deal with the subjects of miniature painting and calligraphy . Calligraphic treasures of the Elamite cuneiform and Sassanid Pahlavi script as well as scripts from the Islamic period (from 661) are on display. In the Museum of arts and crafts fine handicrafts are on display, objects of traditional daily life, however, in the Ethnographic Museum . The military museum with weapons from the Achaemenid period to the present, as well as a water supply museum complete the themed world and complement the educational requirements.
