Sabinianus (Pope)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sabinianus (* in Blera ; † February 22, 606 , buried in St. Peter , Rome ) was Pope from 604 to 606.

Sabinianus comes from Blera (Bieda) near Viterbo . He was the son of a certain Bonus, but his year of birth is unknown.

In 593 he was sent to Constantinople by Gregory I as apocrisy ( apostolic nuncio ) , but in 595 he was called back because he did not pursue the Roman point of view decisively and did not prevent the patriarch there from accepting the title of " Ecumenical Patriarch ".

After a mission in Gaul and after he had passed through all the offices of the hierarchy, he was probably appointed Pope after the death of Gregory I in March 604, but had to wait for the approval of Emperor Phocas , so that he was not officially until September 13, 604 could be declared pope. It was criticized at the time that he kept his unchristian name as Pope.

The peace agreement between Smaragdus , the exarch of Ravenna , and the Longobard king Agilulf is due to his mediation work . He moved away from the monk-friendly policy of his predecessor.

When a famine broke out, he sold the grain from the papal granary, while his predecessors had given it away for free, which made him hateful among the population. The details of his death on February 22nd, 606 are unknown. In any case, his body had to be brought from the Lateran to St. Peter's Church to protect it from the anger of the people.

Sabinianus is also credited with the introduction of the ringing of church bells for the prayer of the hours and the celebration of the Eucharist .
